OK I’m not technically “on safari”, but I am on location most of this week, and I get to hang out at a remote, beautiful beach doing a pretty cool shoot – does that count?  This whole editorial spread by who else?  Carine Roitfeld, made me stop and look again and again. Something a lot of fashion images don’t make me do theses day. Kinda loving it.

Teen Vogue is killing it with this piece on the new Vans sneakers – featuring print patterns reissued from the 70, 80′s and 90′s. Can’t even tell you how classic the checkerboard print is to me from my skate days…

P.S. I love that Teen Vogue fashion editor Gloria Baume’s daughter, Anita, is a skater! I think we need to hook her up with GRO (Girl Riders Organization) so she can have some rad skate adventures in NYC and meet other cool girls who skate.   I’m really seriously stoked to see so many girl out there skating nowadays. xx

I remember the days of wearing a boys wetsuit, it was ugly, solid black, thick and baggy , and so damn hard to move in -  but I was stoked to have something to keep me warm in the chilly water.  Forget that shit!  Cynthia Rowley’s new line of spring suits are all about, fit, function and color.

I woke up thinking about how I can’t wait for summer to get here and then Shopbop reinforced that luscious feeling with this new lookbook. I may be broke before the sun comes out here in LA!

An absolutely amazing day spent with old friends at the Vans Pool Party!  Nothing like seeing the boys you skated with back in the day battle it out in the masters division, kicking more ass than ever.  I’m thinking 40-50 is the new 20, because these guys were making it look easy.  In the masters, it was Chris Miller in 1st, Steve Caballaero in 2nd and Christian Hosoi in 3rd. The pro division rocked as well with Bucky Lasek coming in first, Pedro Barros 2nd and Rune Glifberg in 3rd.

Another great thing about this skate event is that it brings all of us together again – getting to hang with my fellow female pro skaters from the early days,  watching Steve Van Doren make hot dogs on the grill, getting silly in front of the camera, teasing our pro boys, and just having a blast. That’s what skateboarding has always been about and this event always has that feeling from start to finish.

Thank you to the awesome team at Vans for putting it on year after year, and welcoming all of us into their “house”.  We love you guys!!

Tonight is our prom, it’s our high school reunion, it’s our adult version of spring break,  it’s all of those things. It’s the ultimate party for the kids who didn’t really show up at school because we were too busy skateboarding and seeing the world. It’s for the kids who were “different” back in the 60′s and 70′s but were 100% OK with that. It’s for the kids who are now rock stars and legends, artists and skaters, moms and dads, husbands and wives, and always good friends.

We are all grown up now, but these are our families still. We’d do anything for these people – there is a bond that can not be broken. It’s like siblings who may fight but are together through thick and then. We take care of our own. We love, cherish, and respect our history and those in it. We are family.

Tonight we come together to honor those we are inducting into the Skateboarding Hall of Fame.

One of those inductee’s  is a girl from the 70′s who was a fashion icon, a girl who skated like the wind and had the grace and style to make you stop and look, and look again. She spun 360 after 360 while the boys watched in awe, she rode before it was the “popular” thing to do, she practiced freestyle routines in the hot summer sun, she traveled with the  boys from contest to contest up and down the coast of Southern California instead of going to prom, shopping at the mall or any other of those  other “popular” girl activities. If you are a girl and skate now,  she is one of the women who paved the way for you.  She is a girl I am very proud to call my good friend.

Congratulations Laura Thornhill Caswell for your 2013 induction into the Skateboarding Hall of Fame!   You ROCK baby!!  xx

This year’s Icon Award recipients are pioneering skateboard photographer Warren Bolster, who revived Skateboarder Magazine in the 1970s; NHS and the crew who built it into what it is today – Richard Novak, Jay Shuirman, Bob Denike, Tim Piumarta and Jeff Kendall – and Devo, a band with the non-conformist attitude that has been inspiring skateboarders since the 1970s.
